Chapter Fourteen

Bryce

Bryce paced the clearing as he waited for the couples to return, his thoughts more tangled than they had been an hour before. A stray pinecone crunched beneath his sole, a spider scuttling across the grass to flee his stomping sandals.

He mustered a smile as Braxton and Edward returned, but they hardly noticed. They could barely look away from each other, both reeking of arousal and sweat from the chase. Bryce should have been congratulating himself, or at the bare minimum reaching for his back to give himself a pat. He tried not to do the latter too often because he usually pulled a muscle.

The fisher alpha and his mate appeared next, giving him a quick wave before they disappeared toward their cabin. They had been one of the easiest couples he’d ever dealt with, and barely memorable. They had probably chosen the place because of the name—just like Wilfred Parsons had.

Feral Woods was supposed to be about finding your beast and making peace with them with your mate at your side. Sex usually solved itself once a person stopped holding back or tried to live a life that someone else had decided for them. It wasn’t about forcing someone.

He growled, toeing off his sandals so he could feel the grass beneath his feet. He dealt with bigoted assholes all the time, so why did this one bother him more than any other? Maybe because Cambry had snuck under his skin the moment he’d stepped into the house, his scent seeping into everything as if it belonged.

Jake had been right. He should have never let an omega into their house. It didn’t even feel like theirs anymore.

Glancing at the door, he glared at the frame that was just a tad cock-eyed. The house looked the same as it always had, but for some reason, he couldn’t imagine it without Cambry inside.

He couldn’t picture what it had been like to have an empty bed in the room beyond the bathroom, with Jake curled at his side and snuffling in his sleep. He couldn’t imagine waking up without wondering what two men were thinking instead of just one. It had only been a few days, but he knew those days had changed him forever.

A staggering growl echoed through the forest, his hair prickling as the sound struck him. It was Jake—louder and with more desperation than Bryce had heard in a long time.

Did something trigger him? It hadn’t been all that long since Jake had fought other alphas in illegal cage matches, and rage like his never truly disappeared. Bryce had helped him harness it and pour it into beautiful things, but everyone had their limits.

He darted into the forest, a stray stick stabbing the soft arch of his foot after only a few steps. He staggered as his eyes watered from the sharp sting, gripping the bark of a nearby tree as he hopped.

How many times had Jake told him that he needed to wear proper footwear in the bush? Rattlesnakes aside, there were so many things that could hurt him.
